Can you switch an "OFF" switch on?
All weekend the server, with my music files for my app on, has been up and down like a yo-yo. I can't FTP on to it to add more music, and my users cam't download music! Not very good.. I might have to update the program to use the alternative server and close my account with the current provider.
We (friends!) were talking about remaking some old movies, and I suggested Jurassic Park. How would I film the shots of dinosaurs? Easy. Pluck chickens, paint them green and film them from low down.
I've got loads of MP3s on my phone... Too many I think, as they seem to have started breeding. I found one MP3 on there I've never heard of, or put on there!
Finally finished adding all the national anthems to my app... Apart from Libya and Mauritania, which I have the sheet music for, just need to check them.
My Google AdSense account has been disabled! The moment my app starts to get downloaded and earning some money, Google stick the oar in. I was warned this may happen, but I must admit I'm surprised.
The national anthem of Mauritius does not lend itself to being played on a piano - I shall leave it for a while to see what I can do!
What is the current national anthem of Libya?
In the national anthem of Madagascar, the verse referes to the Fatherland, but in the chorus calls it 'She'! Is that for real, or just a mis-translation?
Back in action - real work got in the way of pleasure. Nice to get back to converting music
So much work to do... Most of it paying stuff :) I bought a big book so that I can write every task I need to do in, and cross them off as I do them. Only problem is, there is so much to cross off now. Still, it keeps me on track, and is nice to look back and see what I have achieved.
How dare Real work get in the way! So much to do, but I'll make time now for a few reviews - they're mounting up.
So, we've voted to leave the European Union. What does this mean to me? Well, the rain isn't falling up, no giant ants and no nuclear winter. I wait to see.... Right, off to do 3 reviews.
Brain shift from VB.net to HTML and PHP mode today. Needed to demonstrate how a form would work, and what happens to the data on the other side. I wonder what people think happens when they fill in an online form and 'submit' it..do they think their details just appear on a Post-It note on somebody's desk somewhere, with no thought to all the processing and database work required? Then I wonder 'do I care?'.
What I look for in an android game is fun and simplicity. I don't want to wade through loads of instructions that tell me to tap on this icon to move up ladders, and this slider to increace the diamond production of that goblin. I can't be bothered with games that require me to line up three special gems once every 3 stages to collect a token that will allow me to change the speed that fruits will drop in to the empty slots vacated by horizontally linked cloud ponies with a pink one in the middle. This is why I spend so much time playing solitaire card games...and in it's day, hour after hour playing Duke Nukem. Complicated games get uninstalled fast, simple pick-up-and-put-down games stay longer.
Picked my Dad up Saturday morning and we drove to Chatham, stopping once for a stretch and drink (non-booze). We found a hotel and booked in for the night then walked around the town for a while. Had food, then I went Ghost Hunting in Fort Amherst. A very good evening with nice company (living company). Looking forward to the next hunt.
Chatham, however, is blighted by traffic lights that always seemed to be red when I got to them. I wouldn't be so paranoid if it only happened a few times, but it was nearly every time for the two days.
So busy doing grown up work I've had no time to play! Still, at least it all worked first time and faster than I expected. Off to Chatham this weekend on a Ghost Hunt. I don't believe in ghosts so if I ever see one I'm going to have to rethinnk everything.
I got this message, titled piece of shit, from another user in Making Money with Android forums:
Having read the message can you guess what their apps were like? If there was nothing wrong in the games for me to find, then they would be in the clear. I thought I was being quite kind to them in my reviews. So, I told them I'd gladly remove the reviews. What I have actually done is remove the mark out of ten, replace the review with an information message, and left the links to the youtube video and the google play store. People can make their own minds up.
Now my review shows this.
Shopping done. Invoices done. Work emails done. Got a reply to one of those emails... Who is working on a Sunday? Well, apart from me, but I'm self employed, so that doesn't count.
Did some more reviews and queued up two more to do.
Right now I'm watching something on the TV and it's gone in to adverts. I can't remember what I'm in the middle of watching! Maybe it's time to turn the TV off.
I'm completely shattered and way ready for bed (just a bit too early to go). Up this morning, gave someone a lift to the airport (3 hours!). Four reviews completed. Got some proper work done. Washed a massive load of dishes. Listened to Deep Purple (Made in Japan) really really loud as I drove back from the airport on my own.
All in all, a full day.
Then end of a busy week. More people after more work. How come you can be quiet for months, then everything goes crazy. Finally managed to get 2 outstanding reviews done and posted.
Looking forward to pizza tonight.
It's been one of those days where every job I've done has worked out straight away - why can't that happen more often. I finished much earlier than I expected. This has given me time to get a couple of reviews done. Might get more done later as I have nothing planned for this evening.
So much achieved in just one day. Managed to get loads of my Proper Work done, ready for a meeting tomorrow. Also managed to get 3 reviews done for my Hobby Job.
Removed the Google Advert coding from my site as they still say there isn't enough content...**** 'em, I say
Bed soon :)
It was an interesting day at Amazon yesterday. I learnt quite a bit...however, some of it I didn't need to learn. This means my brain has had to forget something else (a skill or some knolwedge that I haven't used for a long time). So, consequently, I have forgotten how to make pastry and how to spell 'hahsborwn'). Still, worth the trip, even if it did remind me how much I dislike working in London.
Vooooomph! All of a sudden downloads and used of my Sing Along Free app has rocketed. Well, a few, but it's a start and I hope it's not just a blip.
All ready for my trip to Amazon tomorrow. I thought about taking my laptop, but the idea of travelling round London with it is a bit of a put off, so I'll take a tablet instead.
I also managed to get some real work done today - so it's been a good day.
Three more reviews done. Three computers repaired (software problems). But, that's about it today, apart from a bit of food shopping. I wanted to get more done today, but my enthusiasm tank seems to be almost empty. Maybe it'll be topped up by morning.
Caught up with all outstanding reviews!
Resupplied my Dad with wine.
Cleared the decks for working tomorrow.
I have been completely LAZY today. Apart from some food shopping, I have achieved nothing. I was supposed to pick someone up from work at 6am, but slept through my 5:30 alarm. They phoned me at 5 past 6, but as it was a Saturday, I got there in less than 20 minutes....I went back to bed when I got home.
I only managed to get one more review done. Tomorrow I promise to be more productive.
Caught up with loads of reviews. Over 100 videos posted on youtube now. When writing reviews I sometimes struggle with what to say, then remember that unless I'm honest people will ignore what I write. Unfortunately this means that if I think an app has issues, then I have to say so. Having done it a few times makes it easier, but I have to remember that there is a person on the other end of my typing, but if I'm not honest about their work I may not be helping. I do point out that if they update their app then I can add to my review - not edit or replace, but add an update. Then again, my reviews are exactly that, they are mine, and what I am not keen on may be wonderful to someone else, and what I think is fantastic will appear rubbish in anothers eyes.
What a genius move to call 'Boaty McBoatface' the 'Sir David Attenborough' - defused the situation in one stroke. They are still calling one of its sub-sea remote vehicles 'Boaty'
I spoke to a computer company about port forwarding, smtp, imap, opening ports, firewall settings etc.... They just agreed with everything I said. I think my mistake is in assuming that people in the same industry have the same amount of knowledge that over 30 years experience has given me. I suppose it would be like assuming that if I read a Haynes manual, I'd know all about car mechanice. I'm quite happy to leave the maintenance of something I sit in at 70mph (the speed limit!) to a professional. Anyway, it all works properly now!
I also managed to get another 4 reviews completed today, and queue up a few more. Can't believe I've nearly reached 100 review videos on youtube.
A day doing proper work. Got the webmail access workin to the mail system I put in the other day, but still have a problem with access via smtp - must be a mistake in the port forwarding. Did some more on the Inventory system using Visual Studio.
I was surprised how much web traffic was created by just one person puttling a link on facebook. Personally, I don't have facebook or twitter..if I want people to know what I'm up to, I can post it here. You'll know when I'm fed up with my blog when I start posting pictures of cats, dogs and/or food all the time.
My grand plan of not having to go to work tomorrow (a public holiday) seems to have failed. It would appear that they are having trouble connecting Outlook to the mail server - even though I set one up, tested it and printed out the settings. If you want a job done properly, do it yourself!
Three more reviews done today, and I may get the last outstanding one finished too. However, when I'm recording the videos I have to mute the TV or HiFi, otherwise the background sounds will be captured. So, it doesn't help when people come shouting and burping down the stairs while I'm recording. Maybe I should leave those sounds in, then name and shame!
Proper work this morning. Set up vpop3 for a customer. Kept getting an error when trying to send emails. Couldn't work out what it was until I looked at the logs and realised that the sending address was wrong - so simple
Four more reviews done, four more added to the queue.
Friday night is pizza night.
I spoke too soon about having caught up with all the reviews, there are now 4 more to do (so far). I've done the videos, just need to write them up and mark them.
Working tomorrow, but that does mean Sunday and Monday off.
Real work hurt my brain today. Had to write some way-too-complicated SQL things. The customer presses the button, the numbers they want show up on the screen - they have no idea how many routines have to run in the background to get those figures.
Two more reviews done. This, however, means I have none queued up to do. I'm sure the weekend will take care of that.
Yesterday was full of idiots
I insured my 2nd car online using a popular insurance comparison site. It asked 'How many years no claims have you?', so I replied 18 years as that is what is on my other car insurance. I emailled off the proof of this (my insurance schedule and certificate), and my insurance company phoned me to say that I could only use my no claims bonus on one insurance! I told them that the online site only asked for how many years I had, and she told me that it meant how many available years I had. I tried to explain that what is asked and what it meant (according to her) weren't the same. Anyway, she did a new quote using her 'new' details and the quote was the same - but she did kindly agree not to charge me the standard admin fee.
I applied for a Google Adsense account for this website, added the code, as they asked (even though it gives a 404 error on some browsers). And then they turned my application down for the following reason: -
So I'm going to have to make my blog entries larger so that there is more text on my web site, as Google don't seem to think that nearly 200 pages, all with meta-tags are not nearly enough for them to workout what the site is about. It makes me feel useless, so I'm adding more keywords (all in bold), to see if they get the hint. I shall keep resubmitting my application until they get fed up with it.
Maybe I should read my messages....
Oooooo - for a brief moment there, an advert showed up. But now it's back to the 404 error!.... Give it time!
I'm trying to set up Google Ads on my review section of my web site (this site!). I've signed up, added a new ad, copied and pasted the code, but on MS Edge or IE I get a 404 error, on chrome it's just blank. The code is ok as I create my site using only HTML, either using a text editor (Notepad++), or VBA code from a Microsoft Access database. Am I doing something wrong? Well, I did some reading by people who have had the same problem, and it would appear that it may take a little while to sort itself out - but I also added some Meta Tags to see if that would speed things up. Let's see what happens.
Today is offically 'no enthusiasm Monday'. I just can't get started. However, looking at the store listings for some of my apps, I noticed they aren't marketed for android tables, android tv and android wear - sorted that out pronto! Also, I've added them to the 'approved for education', and added a few more key words. See if that boosts downloads.
I went out... I did some more reviews...but I could put if off no longer, I had to start on some of my proper work. I've wasted nearly a whole week putting off starting a project. I've now got the opening procedures started (setting up the database connetcion etc.). Now that I've done that, I can relax! I've achieved what I wanted to today.
Might do another one or two reviews later on, after I've cooked - well, I say cooked, I mean taken out of the packet, stuck it in the oven and boiled the goodness out ouf some vegetables.
Got all the stuff ready I need for work tomorrow - copied to a usb memory stick. But, I'm sure I've forgotten something. It will come to me about 4am.
Four reviews complete - shopping done - someone else's computer problem sorted. Not a bad day. Watching 'After Earth'
Finally, I get to sit down with my laptop. Far too much grown-up type of work today. However, it is/was pizza night, so now I'm full up.
I've got loads of games to review - hopefully catch up tomorrow..after I've taken my Dad shopping.
Great, get home from work to find the house empty - Deep Purple, Made in Japan on nice and loud :)
Re-installed Windows 7 on two computers this morning. Installing doesn't take long, it's all the updates that take the time.
What if Albert Einstein had said 'E=C2M', or the person who invented the Spork called it a Foon?
3 more reviews done (is it ok to start with 3, and not Three? Start again)
Three more reviews done. Some difficult grown up programming stuff done this morning. Can't believe I have to go to work 5 days this week! Still, the bills have to be paid. Also, the driving gives me time to think - I just wish I could remember what I was thinking about.
At what point (after how long) do you give up trying to remove malware from a computer, and just reformat/reinstall windows? Think I'll take the opportunity to drop Windows 7 and stick 10 on. Not overly worried as it's not my computer (or my bill).
Been far too busy with real work to play here today - this must change soon!
That's a new one on me. Connected by wifi, and it says internet access, but no web pages can be displayed. Managed to ping web sites, fine, but still no web pages!
Started command prompt in admin mode and entered netsh winsock reset, rebooted and everything was ok!
However, the laptop is virus ridden! More work needed to sort that out, but at least I managed to download Security Essentials.
I failed to achieve everything on my task list. I did the shopping and drunk the coffee - but a chinese take away distracted me from the real work. Still, 3 days of proper grown up work to do starting tomorrow.
No ghosts seen! (There's a surprise)
Tasks for today
No apps to reivew. Not doing any work today. Having a lazy day until later.
Ghost hunting tonight, except I don't believe in them! So, if I'm wrong and eventually see one, then I'll have to change my way of thinking - but it's not going to happen. I've been on quite a few ghost hunts, and never seen anything that can't be explained as natural.
Arranging work for next week - so much to do!
Asda or Tesco shopping to do today. Need bread, milk etc.
Downloaded a game to review (that's the only one in the pipeline!)
Pizza night tonight :)
I'm all unblinded again now, so I completed two more app reviews.
Got the go ahead on another big bit of proper grown-up system development work - that's two on the go now at the same time. No being lazy for a while. However, this does mean that my work on two new android games will have to go on the back burner.
Can't work today - too many people hanging around. Also, I have an eye checkup this afternoon. They squirt stuff in my eyes that virtually blinds me for hours, makes me very sensative to light (so they shine bright lights in to them!), and ask me to look in to things while they fire lasers at me... and invalidate my car insurance for 4 hours. Still, at least it's all for free.
My goals for today are unremarkably few - writing this blog entry is about all.
It's interesting when you look at your website traffic logs - lots of people trying to hack in by using default logins to popular sofware (for example php admin or wordpress). There must be quite a few people who don't change the deafult passwords and/or users. Personally, I keep all the software off line and only upload the completed HTML code - this has the nice side effect of making my website fast (at the expence of being pretty!)
Trying to sort a problem with an apparent corruption of data on some hand held terminals today....
If it's a hardware update, I might be able to change the PC software. I wait to find out.
Back to Android stuff
The printer wouldn't work after upgrading to Windows 10? Simple to solve... Or so you'd think. I turned everything on, went to see if there were up to date drivers on the manufacturer's web site, but there was no internet access. The troubleshooter said something about a protocol not being installed. I supposed I might need to update the driver for the network card... But I can't get online! I plugged a WiFi dongle in and got the same error. Then I noticed a 3rd party anti-virus running. Uninstalled that, rebooted the computer and everything worked fine.
Today I have achieved everything I set out to do :)
Just written the code that puts my blog entries in the database in to this HTML code!
All of a sudden I find myself swamped with Real World work, and a new/revamped android game to do. Time to create a list of jobs to tick off.
I have a Stock Tracking and Issuing system to write, using a Windows 10 tablet connected by blue tooth to a hand held laser barcode scanner. Also another similar system using the same hardware. Several small jobs to complete too.
I've bought a new micro-hifi system for the front room (where I mostly work) so that I can listen to music or the radio, and not be distracted by the television.
This evenings job is to find out, and solve, why yet another windows 10 upgrade has rendered the printer useless. Also, I just phoned my parents to arrange Thursday, and found out that my Mum has killed her laptop - but she'll use her tablet until I get there on Thursday.
Oh, and I have 6 games to review for Making Money With Android Forums
